Freshwater Conservation Program

Freshwater is the linking factor in both the ecological and economic systems of the Yucatan Peninsula, especially for tourism and urban activities. It is because of this that ASK, has as guiding principle the conservation of the underground freshwater basin. To promote the responsible use of water, ASK uses scientific research to propose conservation and water usage policies. Simultaneously, conducts a number of projects to educate the population on the importance of water conservation and integral management.

Scientific Research

By using the latest technologies, ASK carries out applied research to understand the structure and dynamics of both superficial and underground waters in the Yucatan Peninsula. In order for this investigation to take place, ASK has made and alliance with Austria’s Geological Survey and the Technological University of Denmark. The knowledge, experience and technology these institutions provide have helped to discover new never-recorded before underground rivers, yet is just in the first phases!

Environmental Policy

Water treatment should be the number one priority when it comes to decisions regarding development. In order to be able to take informed decisions by the public sector, ASK provides all the scientific information derived from its investigations to the different levels of the government. ASK also promotes public policies for the responsible management of water resources based on geographic and geologic information of the area.

Environmental Education

The high immigration rate of Quintana Roo and the lack of knowledge of the new residents living from the fragile hydrologic system of the region caused a raise in the demand of freshwater. This raise has had serious effects on the quality of water due to exploitation and inadequate treatment. To counteract this problem, ASK distributes either personally or through public and private institutions a number of books, pamphlets, posters and leaflets with the objective of educating the new population and raising awareness of the impact they produce to their new home. Social Participation

ASK incites social participation through direct participation in the Committee for the Basin of the Yucatan Peninsula, by promoting governmental programs that are concerned with the treatment and conservation of water. These programs stress the need of a better sewer system, the increase of water treatment in small communities and cities, the use of rainwater and water care in general.
