Land Conservation Program

The projects conducted and supported by ASK regarding land conservation, consist of a number of programs that push for the sustainable use of the endemic flora and fauna of jungles and estuaries, as well as for the conservation of the fragile ecosystems of mangroves, flooded jungles and costal dunes. ASK also analyses the land use change and monitors endangered species of the Yucatan Peninsula. In addition, it encourages social participation to preserve the cultural identity, resources, and responsible development through educational programs and coaching of Mayan communities and tourism groups.

Scientific Research

In order to accomplish the necessary and appropriate policies, it is of the highest importance to have actualized, precise and reliable information on the science of the region. Because of this, ASK formed a number of interdisciplinary groups that study, register and document endangered species, land use change, development needs and the infrastructure of rural and urban areas. It is because of this work that ASK has been able to preserve over 1 million hectares of land in Quintana Roo. Additionally, the information retrieved is used for environmental education and training for the proper use of the Yucatan Peninsula’s natural resources.

Environmental Education

To preserve, one must know. The only way to preserve the ecosystems of the Yucatan Peninsula is through the education on the importance of the flora and fauna that constitutes them and the processes they need in order to be work properly. We are part of a global community, and even though we are concerned with other issues around the globe, we know that we have a bigger chance and responsibility of action by working locally. That is why ASK has numerous publications on the Mayan Rainforest and the Mexican Caribbean that can be consulted by the public. In addition to its library, ASK has done a number of workshops and campaigns to educate on the importance of jungles and all the alternatives for its responsible exploitation. These activities take place in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Chetumal, Cozumel, and several fishing communities in the Mayan Zone.

Social Participation

It is only with the help of the public that the jungles of the Yucatan Peninsula can be preserved. From its beginnings, ASK has promoted the participation of the Mayan communities on the conservation of natural resources in state of Quintana Roo. The aim is to provide training on the proper and efficient use of the resources they are so familiar with. For example, using dead wood to make handcrafts, produce natural products like preserves and marmalades, and the use of fast growing trees to make rustic furniture. In addition, ASK also promotes social action through articles in mass media of Quintana Roo, as well as newscast on local radio and television.
