Nowadays, tourism represents one of the most important economic activities in the world with great chances of increasing. México is the number one tourism location in Latin America and is part of the top ten worldwide, thanks to the over 20 million tourists that choose to visit us yearly. Tourism can be considered as the principal economic activity, next to the oil industry and remittances send by nationals that live and work abroad. The Mexican Caribbean relies 100% on tourism, and so do millions of people both in México as well as abroad that benefit from this important industry. However, the dramatic increase in the past forty years and the inability to responsibly plan towns and cities all throughout the state, has made the tourism industry fall into a dilemma: it endangers the same natural resources and treasures it needs to thrive. Deforestation, poor water treatment and waste disposal, irregular settlements, dramatic increase of business and housing and the deforestation of jungles to create parcels are just some of the consequences that tourism has. That is why ASK works so closely with different groups, mainly with the Association of hotels of the Riviera Maya (AHRM) through MARTI to try to reduce the impact of hotels. ASK also works closely with the government and provides advice on responsible building and operation of hotels and other accommodation services. When planning new settlements, ASK promotes and pushes for the preservation of jungles, mangroves and reefs, it also promotes the creation of protected areas in different municipal committees. Above all, and the main goal of ASK is to promote the preservation of natural resources in me Mexican Caribbean in order to allow the tourism industry to grow and continue to benefit Mexicans and nominatives alike.
