The Mesoamerican Reef Tourism Initiative (MARTI) is sponsored by Conservation International, Coral, and Amigos de Sian Ka’an. They work in close contact with the governor of Quintana Roo, through the Secretary of Tourism, and the Hotel Association of Riviera Maya. MARTI is financed by The Summit Foundation and has the support of the following governmental and non-governmental organizations: the hotel industry, cruise lines, the water recreation services and the local government.

Objective

The objective is to minimize the environmental footprint of the tourist industry while maximizing its contribution to the conservation and protection of the Mesoamerican Reef eco-systems.
For that, MARTI will be addressing the main threats related to the habitat, asking the three main sectors of the Tourist Industry: Hotels, Tour Operators and Cruise Lines to better their practices when it comes to handling and administrating the environment in México, Belize and Honduras. >>TOURISM>>

Implementation

Through collaboration with the three main sectors of the tourist industry, hotels, tour operators and cruise lines, MARTI is working to achieve sustainable growth while protecting the environment by implementing policies and practices not only in Mexico but also in Belize and Honduras.
